I not only read this book, I 'studied' it!! It was very informative and the best, simplest explanation I have ever seen on using tense, voice, POV and tone. I thought Anne provided many checklists that help the writer through many of the editing techniques and areas to look for improvements. Let me begin by acknowledging that writers are generally advised NOT to edit their own work. Nevertheless, when the funds are tight or non-existent, self-editing could be the only choice. Anne Rainbow equips you with this book to be suited to the task and objective about it.
There is an editing cycle of 12 RedPen tasks that fall into 3 categories - the big picture, the detail, and your writing style. Anne guides you through each task and explains how to employ it. You simply follow the system as she has laid it out. I doubt if it could be simpler. I suggest that you make this one of your mainstay reference tools, even if you decide to pay an editor also. It will save time in that case.
If you like to write, and fiction is you’re nitch, Editing The RedPen Way is a must for you. I found it extremely helpful for nonfiction too! Anne will lead you systematically through each of her ten steps that walk you through a fail proof self-editing process that will help you offer you’re readers a great read. This book is definitely not limited to the writer of fiction. Whether you are writing a letter, email, or blog post you will benefit from this powerful book. You will read it in no time at all, but will reference it often. Let Anne Rainbow help you write – right.
As an author, I used to look forward to editing with about the same emotions as an annual physical! By providing a step by step approach this book has helped turn a painful activity into something far more bearable. I particularly like how she suggests you take off the writing hat and get into a different mindset. It really helps you become far more detached. I think this is a must-read for anyone who struggles with editing - editing their own work, or someone else's.
As a newbie (been working on first ever book) Anne Rainbow has become what her name implies...Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow. When I first got the book I thought this will be good when I finally do complete the manuscript.
I came to a standstill point where nothing seemed to go right. Since Anne's (hope you don't mind my addressing you by first name) book was the latest addition to my kindle decide to read a little. Long story short the 'read a little' became 'read the entire book'.
There are so many points that Anne denotes that as I read the book was noticing that many of the story structure concepts she presents are areas that I have struggled. I have read so many books and watched webinars on how to be an author that for me were waste of time (and money in some cases)then out comes Editing The Red Pen Way and cleared up a batch of problem areas in my writing.
Needless to say in my highly untrained eye this book should be one that every writer fiction and non-fiction writer should have at hand at all times. Glad I have it as a kindle version because if it was a print book would not be long before the pages would be falling out and possible missing pages.

In Editing the RedPen Way, readers discover the 10 steps to successful self-editing. The author provides insights into identifying which parts of you book will bore readers, so that you can fix them, and into discovering your golden lines, so that you can build on them. I like how the first redpen task is to identify the parts of one's work that are so good they need to remain unchanged.
Although this book focuses on fiction works, there are an abundance relevant tips for nonfiction writers interspersed throughout the book. This book concludes with links to useful editing tools and answers to frequently asked questions. As a writer who does not enjoy editing, I found this book helpful, easy to read, and motivating. In short, my self-editing will be better, having read this!
This book is a God-send at the right time. I have finished the rough draft of my book and am just starting to edit it.
The 10 steps of the RedPen editing cycle are extremely useful for editing any kind of writing. The first step of being completely objective about our work helps me put into perspective my role as an editor and not a creative writer. It allows me to edit without personal and emotional baggage. Every step has a useful YES/NO checklist which makes the whole self-editing process effortless.
Also, I like the idea of highlighting golden lines from the text, and working on refining or even removing unessential writing. This helps clarify the message. While only two steps in the cycle requires a red pen, the other steps are absolutely necessary for good editing. It helps me visualize the texts and areas needing work. Rather than going through word for word, this process makes editing easier and more effective. Thank you Ms. Rainbow for sharing your technique with us!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who ever needs to write, whether it's a student, an author, or an office worker writing a report. This book is proven to polish your writing into a shinning gem!
