The Iliad is an ancient Greek epic poem in dactylic hexameter, traditionally attributed to Homer. Set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy (Ilium) by a coalition of Greek states, it tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles. Although the story covers only a few weeks in the final year of the war, the Iliad mentions or alludes to many of the Greek legends about the siege; the earlier events, such as the gathering of warriors for the siege, the cause of the war, and related concerns tend to appear near the beginning. Then the epic narrative takes up events prophesied for the future, such as Achilles' looming death and the sack of Troy, although the narrative ends before these events take place. However, as these events are prefigured and alluded to more and more vividly, when it reaches an end the poem has told a more or less complete tale of the Trojan War.

Maybe I received the abbreviated and incomplete version, but this is a travesty! We already have our children being told that they are reading the Iliad when they are reading edited synopses written by hacks. I am shocked that Amazon would market anything as shoddy as this!Thankfully, Samuel Butler is not identified as the translator on the title page. He was an excellent stylist and whoever edited this is NOT.

The Iliad Homer Samuel Butler 9781542361941 Books Reviews
This was an incomplete book. Only contained up to book 8 which trailed off in the end. Son had to do it for summer reading and did not have the complete book available. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SELLER
I didn't care for the synopsis at the beginning of every book(chapter) and I'm not really into endless battle descriptions, but it was very readable all the same.
The last page the book ends in the middle of an Unpunctuated sentence... without thought completed.. it is not the complete version... needless to say unacceptable!
Love this book. Came in great condition for an affordable price.
I think you rating system needs revamping for the Classics. Describe the plot of this book... Really This isn't a bad translation though and the price is right.
This is an extremely badly abridged, incomplete (ends in mid sentance) print on demand product. It is hard to not call it fraudulent. NOT the Iliad and definitely NOT Homer. I received a credit and did not have to return the copy but I won't even donate the book. No one deserves this lame, incomplete, badly translated, non-book. DO NOT BUY!
I could not recommend this book to anyone; except as an example of what a book is not and what a good translation is not. First, about the
form of the book itself no title page; no copyright/publication page; no forward/introduction; it ends in the middle of a sentence. Need I say more?Second, about the translation itself. Homer wrote The Iliad before Rome was even a gleam in its father's eye so how could anyone claiming to be translating The Iliad and call Zeus Jove, Hera Juno, Ares Mars, Aphrodite Venus, and Athena Minerva? Was this an English translation of a Roman translation of the original Greek or what? Save your money.
